- MURA has nearly 1,000 MU & UM retired staff and faculty members.
- Membership is open to persons aged 55 and older who are University of Missouri retirees, former employees, and active employees, as well as their spouses/partners. With approval of the MURA Board, retirees from other universities or colleges may also become members.
- Established in 1990 by faculty and staff to give voice to retirees, MURA represents and protects the interests of the retired MU and UM community and promotes the welfare of the University.
- The Educational Breakfast series is one of MURA’s most popular programs. Breakfast programs are held on the first Tuesday of the month, September through June.
- Breakfasts cover a wide variety of topics. In election years, the October breakfast features a candidate forum.
- Online participation provided to those unable to attend in person.
- Registration is required, and there is a small participation fee for in-person participation
- The Program Committee plans and conducts social activities, which includes a December holiday gathering.
- MURA members enjoy events hosted by the MU Chancellor such as the Spring and Fall Socials.
- MURA plans educational forums and/or field trips each year.
- Ray Schroeder, MURA Pioneer, is honored at a social gathering.
- The MU Retirees Association created its first scholarship fund in 2016 named the Kitty Dickerson MURA Scholarship Fund in honor of our late past MURA president, Dr. Kitty Dickerson.
- The Endowed Fund is dedicated to the support of MU students who are dependents of full-time MU/UM STAFF. Scholarships are renewable.
- The endowment account is over $160,000 and individual scholarships have grown from $500 (2016 to 2 students) to $1500/student (2025 to 6 students).
- In the 2025-26 academic year, MURA awarded its 36th scholarship
- In 2026, 8 scholarships for $1,800 will be awarded for the next academic year.
- MURA is pleased to join the MU Chancellor in recognizing the contributions that retirees make as they continue to improve our world.
- Each year, the MURA Awards Committee helps select a retired faculty member and a retired staff member who have made significant contributions to their communities and/or professions since their retirement from the MU or UM System at least five years prior.
- Selection for The Chancellor’s Retiree of the Year Award results in their names being placed on a plaque in Jesse Hall and a $1,000 check in recognition of their contributions.
