Kitty Dickerson
The MU Retirees Association (MURA) Kitty Dickerson Scholarship honors the scholar and industry leader, Dr. Kitty Dickerson. After her distinguished career and service as Department Chair of MU Textile and Apparel Management, Dickerson assumed the role of MURA President. In this role she was the energizing force in creating a scholarship specifically for students who are the dependents of MU and UM staff families.
Hers is an American story of success through hard work and education. From her rural beginnings in the Virginia mountains, she was raised on a small country farm with no electricity, no running water and no indoor plumbing. While being a first-generation college student, she rose to national and international acclaim as a pioneer in the global textile economy while also a powerful professional role model for students. From the pinnacle of her own career until her untimely death in 2017, she never forgot the struggle of students desiring a college education.
The number and dollar amount of scholarships given steadily increases with a continuing commitment to helping more students.
