Meeting called to order by President Tom Freeman who introduced Rod Gelatt, Pres-Elect and Program Chairman.

Mr. Gelatt introduced Beverly Borduin, Principal of Grant School, who gave a presentation on volunteering at Grant or any Columbia public school.

Gary Smith reported on a meeting between Chancellor Deaton and the MURA Executive Committee. The Chancellor was very supportive of our concerns regarding the retirement program as well as the value of involving retirees in support of campus issues and he was receptive to changing the membership of the MU Retirees Advisory Committee from two ex-officio retirees to four with full voting rights.

Gary also reported on a meeting with President Floyd and Vice President Hutchinson regarding the retirement program and related issues. Representatives for all four campus retirees associations were in attendance. At the close of the meeting the representatives from the four campuses agreed to put their concerns in writing. The President of each campus retirees association will write a letter to the President, Vice President and respective Chancellors ASAP.

Bob Stewart said the UM Benefit Committee looks at the total benefit program for UM employees and retirees. There are currently 5600 individuals receiving pensions. UM will contribute 8.69% of active payroll to the retiree fund for this year.

John Parker gave a presentation on the opportunities of teaching in Thailand. If anyone is interested, please contact him.

Lucille Salerno, Director of MU Lifelong Learning Program, said they have six out-of-state locations and three courses through libraries as well as on-going programs in Columbia.

Business

Bob Marshall distributed copies of the Treasurer’s report of February 28, 2006. Report was unanimously approved.

Charles Cramer, Chairman of Nominating Committee, presented the slate of officers for election: Jo Behymer, 1 year term, for President-elect and Program Chair; Kee Groshong, 3 year term, for Member at Large (Staff); Bob Marshall, 2 year term, for Treasurer; and Ray Rothenberger, 3 year term for Member at Large (Faculty). Gary Smith made a motion to accept the entire slate by acclimation. Approved by vote.

Rod Gelatt reported the Holiday lunch and spring social were successes. Remember to send in your reservation for the spring picnic in May.

Ernest Hilderbrand, Membership, stressed keeping your email address current with him for future notices. There are 1369 current members of MURA with 555 being lifetime members.

John Bauman, MU Benefit Committee, encouraged everyone to have new retirees join MURA.

Tom Freeman, Publications, invited anyone to send him news for the upcoming newsletter.

Interest Groups

  • Investments Group meets the 4th Tuesday at 2:00 in S. Memorial Union, contact Ernest Hilderbrand.
  • Personal Finance Group meets the second and fourth Monday, contact Dabney Doty.
  • Gary Smith asked anyone to volunteer to man the reception desk at the Reynolds Center.

Meeting adjourned at 11:50.
