From our President's Desk

I have many times heard retirees comment they are so busy that they don’t know how they ever had time to work. I am now experiencing that feeling first-hand. Too many opportunities and so little time! Speaking of opportunities, there are several coming up that I would like to call to your attention.

The breakfast programs chaired by John Parker are off to a good start. (See the article updating this activity on page 6 of this newsletter.)

The Membership Committee co-chaired by Roger Mitchell and Ernest Hilderbrand are continuing the aggressive membership drive that was begun last year. They ask for your help in recruiting a friend or former colleague to become a member of MURA.

The Fall Information meeting will be on Saturday, November 15 in the Jesse Wrench Auditorium at the Memorial Student Union, a change in location from previous years. (See the sidebar calendar on this page.)

Our annual Holiday Luncheon will be on Saturday, December 13 in the Stotler Lounge at the Memorial Union, also a change of location. (Please see the reservation form on page 7 of this newsletter.)

The 2008 Heart of Missouri United Way Campaign is under way. MU has always played a big part in the success of this worthwhile fund raising endeavor. Those of you living in the Columbia area should have already received a packet with information about the campaign and how you can contribute.I know that, given the current uncertainties in the economy, it is often hard to consider another donation, but please remember that there are many very needy families and individuals in our community who have far less than most of us do. This is one of the best ways we can help a large number of people. If you have not sent in your pledge card, please do so today.Every gift, no matter the amount, helps so many people.

In closing, I am sure that you hardly need a reminder of the upcoming national election on November 4. While I would not presume to tell you how to vote, the important thing is that you go to the polls and exercise your right to cast your ballot as you see fit. It is important that we all vote. Every single vote counts!

I hope to see you on November 15 at the Informational meeting.

MU Asian Affairs Center invites you to play host to Asian students

Could you share a Sunday or evening meal with an international student or a family? If there’s one thing that Americans and Asians really have in common, it’s a love of food and bonding over a meal. The Asian Affairs Center at MU invites you to play host to two of our visiting students or scholars from Pacific Rim countries, inviting them to your home for an American-style dinner/supper.

The meal need not be fancy. These students and scholars welcome the opportunity to sit and talk with Americans in a relaxed setting. The age of Americans doesn’t seem to matter to students. They are pleased to interact with children, retired couples, as well as people of their age. It’s comes as a surprise to them that Americans do have meals and do not exist on “fast food” alone!

    The Aging Front

    by Ann Gowans

You might be interested in a comparison of the health care plans being proposed by the two candidates pursuing the governor’s office.

When discussing a reduction in the number of uninsured Missourians, Congressman Hulshof’s plan would support our current governor’s health care cuts and his plan does not include restoring coverage to the many thousands of Missourians who had their insurance cut. Attorney General Nixon’s plan would restore coverage and benefits to those Missourians who had it cut by Governor Blunt in 2005.

As we consider the Costs for Missouri families, Congressman Hulshof’s plan is unlikely to significantly reduce the number of uninsured. Attorney General Nixon’s plan would reduce the number of uninsured and create more pressure on the market to drive down health care costs for our families.

We currently have 150,000 uninsured children in our state. Congressman Hulshof does not mention any effort to provide insurance to Missouri’s uninsured children. Attorney General Nixon would restore coverage to children who had it cut in 2005, and reach out to families with children who are currently eligible for Medicaid/State Children’s Health insurance Program (SCHIP). This would allow families above 300% of the federal poverty level the opportunity to purchase coverage through SCHIP.

The cost to Missouri taxpayers would differ according to the candidate’s plan. Hulshof’s plan would cost the state of Missouri $508 million to implement, plus $82 million in matching funds from the government. Nixon’s plan would cost the state $265 million and would draw down $431 million in new federal health care dollars that the state would otherwise be turning away.
