Membership

Dear Prospective Member:

The Missouri University Retirees Association (MURA) is making a special effort to inform University retirees of the benefits and need for your membership in MURA. Membership is open to all University of Missouri staff and faculty who are 55 years old or older whether retired or still working. Membership is available to Extension, USDA, Hospital or System faculty/staff. Anyone who is vested or retired from any of the four University System campuses may join MURA.

MURA was started in 1990 so that retirees from MU could have an organization to represent them to the campus. We provide continual monitoring of retiree concerns, but especially pensions and health insurance. MURA officers regularly meet with administrators from the campus and the system. We also meet often with legislators in Jefferson City. We feel it is important to keep the interests of the retirees continually before these people. Each year we work with administrators and key committees to form new programs and to see that ongoing programs are properly funded. It is important that as many retirees as possible join the MURA organization so that our work will continue. It is important to keep our benefits comparable to those at other universities. It is important to know what is happening at the federal and state levels that impacts retirement.

On another level membership in MURA provides for good communication among retirees. MURA publishes a newsletter for members three or four times a year and you can find information on current MURA activities, studies of issues connected with retirement, and copies of previous MURA newsletters. In addition, the following activities are open to all members:

  • Fall organizational meeting
  • December Holiday Lunch
  • Spring picnic
  • Annual spring meeting
  • Two social mixers each year
  • Interest groups including personal finance, travel, and an investment club
  • A series of courses titled "Lifespan Learning" covering topics such as Shakespeare, Music, Home Horticulture, Computers, Creative Writing, Investing, and Globalization.

We do need your membership so we can continue to be a vital force in the lives of retirees on the MU campus. We keep the fees low at $7.50 per year or $75 for a life membership. Those 55 and older are invited to join - and do not have to be retired yet.
