Board Meeting Minutes
April 23, 2008
Meeting was called to order at 2:00 p.m. by President Jo Behymer, with the following in attendance: Charles Cramer, Jo Behymer, Veralee Hardin, Ken Schneeberger, Tom Freeman, Jean Zwonitzer, Barton Boyle, Al Hahn, Bob Marshall, Ed Hunvald, Bob Stewart and Sylvia Bradfield.
President Behymer introduced Beth Chancellor of the MU IT Department who distributed a handout for a Sustainability Task Force that has been formed on the Columbia campus. If anyone is interested in a particular area to volunteer, contact the individual on the list directly.
Minutes
from the February 12, 2008 BOD Meeting were approved.
Treasurer
Bob Marshall distributed a copy of the report as of March 31, 2008 which shows a checkbook balance of $7,072.97 and a total balance of $52,664.59 including other assets. He suggested making another investment from the checkbook balance. A committee of Gary Zwonitzer, Charles Cramer and Bob Marshall will meet and discuss the amount to invest.
MURA Directory
Jean Zwonitzer said June 1st is the target date to have the directory printed. Approximately $686 has been spent on the new MURA brochure, stationary and envelopes plus a recruitment letter.
Awards
There was a good selection of awardees to choose from this year, and Rod Gelatt for faculty and Georgia Morehouse for staff were chosen. This committee’s work is done for the year.
Program
The spring picnic will be May 14th. An email reminder will be sent. A reservation for the corresponding date for the 2009 picnic will be made on May 15. The fall meeting should be in October of 2008 and the Board needs to consider how to increase the attendance at this meeting. Bob Marshall mentioned that the cost of the 2008 spring meeting was doubl the 2007 fall meeting – Barton Boyle will check on the difference. They will change the name of the ‘spring’ social for 2009 will be changed to “winter social.”
Membership
Jean Zwonitzer distributed a report from Ernest Hilderbrand as of April 22, 2008, showing there were now 502 lifetime members and 270 members had paid in 2008, 2009, or 2010. A reminder letter will be sent to individuals who have not paid dues from 1998 to 2007. Some of the interests groups being organized have several people interested in participating.
Recruitment ads have resulted in some new members. Mizzou Weekly has three more times to run.
Benefits
Bob Stewart – Their next meeting will be April 29th. Medicare Advantage will not be rolled out this year for MU faculty and staff. Other avenues will be pursued.
University Liaison
This group met with President Forsee on April 22nd. Jo Behymer indicated that President Forsee had announced previously that there will be no pension adjustment this year. Gary Smith will set up a meeting for the representatives of the four campuses to meet with the Board of Curator’s President.
Communications
Tom Freeman – July 10th will be the deadline for the next newsletter.
Constitution
Charles Cramer – A copy of the proposed changes to the MURA Constitution will be sent to the MURA BOD as amendments. These will be presented at the MURA Fall meeting for a vote. The explanation of the changes will appear in the summer newsletter.

Ed Hunvald – no report
Retirement, Health and Other Benefits Advisory Committee
Al Hahn – He will send minutes from previous meetings to MURA Secretary for placement on the MURA website - Ken Hutchinson’s replacement will begin in July. Mike Paden attended their meeting, and stated that few universities or businesses furnish insurance for their retirees. This is an ongoing concern for University retirees.
Government Affairs
Ken Schneeberger – nothing to report
AROHE Meeting – Motion was made to provide up to $1000 for Barton Boyle to attend and present at the 2008 AROHE meeting in Los Angeles, CA (airfare, room, meals). Zwonitzer/Hahn seconded – voted and approved.
Partnerships
Jo Behymer The MURA President and President Elect are now on the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Advisory committee as a result of the formal partnership approved by MURA. A motion was made by Al Hahn (seconded by Bob Stewart) to form partnerships with the Mizzou Alumni Association and the Mizzou Flagship Council and to join the Mizzou Flagship Council ($100 annually). Voted on and approved. Jo Behymer will pursue the partnerships with Todd McCubbin and Diane Drainer, respectively.
Next Curator’s meeting will be June 5-6 in Columbia and Jo Behymer encouraged Board members to attend. The next MURA Board meeting will be July 10 at 2:00 in room S206 Memorial Union.
Jo thanked the MURA BOD for their service during her tenure as President.
